Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to summarize key facts about Americans’ relationships with guns. We used data from recent Center surveys to provide insights into Americans’ views on gun policy and how those views have changed over time, as well as to examine the proportion of adults who own guns and their reasons for doing so. The Center survey questions used in this analysis … The right to bear arms is guaranteed in the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. But the government plays an important role in regulating the sale and use of guns. The public is closely divided over whether it’s more important to protect the rights of Americans to own guns or to control gun … ABOUT PEW RESEARCH CENTER Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan, nonadvocacy fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world. It does not take policy positions. The Center conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, computational social science research and other data-driven research. Pew Research Center is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable … Republicans and Democrats differ sharply in views of the new gun law, its effectiveness and whether further gun legislation will be necessary. Roughly six-in-ten adults (63%) say they want to see Congress pass another round of legislation to address gun violence, compared with 35% who do not. The number of gun deaths in the U.S. fell for the third consecutive year in 2024 but remained among the highest annual totals on record. Still, majorities of gun owners oppose these policy proposals. Gun owners’, non-owners’ views by political party Across seven of the eight policy proposals asked about in the survey, gun owners within each political party are more likely than non-owners of the same party to favor policies that expand access to guns and ammunition. Here are five facts related to the NRA and the issue of gun rights and gun control: Just as the NRA’s focus has shifted over time from its start as an organization focused on training and marksmanship to one that is a major player in the battle over gun control, the reasons why Americans own guns also have changed. The share of Democrats who support stricter gun laws has risen 11 percentage points since 2017, while there has been 7-point increase in support among Republicans. When it comes to specific gun-related policies, the public finds broad agreement in certain areas. Growing shares of Americans view both gun violence and violent crime as very big national problems. 49% of U.S. adults say gun ownership increases safety by allowing law-abiding citizens to protect themselves; an identical share says it reduces safety by giving too many people access to firearms and increasing misuse. On priorities for gun policy, growing partisanship has been responsible for much of the shift in opinion. In the 1993 survey, Republicans and Republican-leaning independents were divided over whether it is more important to control gun ownership or protect gun rights (47% each).
